LEELOO

Dear Answerbox

After my husband, Jack, retired we moved to France.

He’d spent part of his childhood here and had always wanted to come back. It wasn’t a dream I discouraged. After forty years perming hair in Kirksville, Missouri, a cottage on the French coast sounded like a real nice idea.

Four months ago Jack suffered a massive heart attack. It was so sudden and unexpected, I still can’t believe he’s gone.

I depended on him for so many things. My French is terrible, so Jack did all the talking and translating.
I figured I’d pick up the language over time, but I never got that chance.

His death left me alone and grieving in a foreign country. I need support, but I’m surrounded by people I can’t even understand.

I’ve never felt so desperate to hear an American voice.

I’d welcome any advice you may have.

DR. HERBERT BOCK

Dear Answerbox

My wife is a doctor and, though we rarely argue, we almost came to blows over the recent healthcare debate.

She believes a free market economy is necessary to drive progress and it’s why America leads the field in medicine. She says I’m naive, a hopeless liberal and beyond help.

My understanding is that a free market economy is driven by the need to generate profit. It’s a terrific model for producing something as desirable as the iPhone, but not so great when it comes to generating compassion for the sick.

I’ve nothing against profit, but I’ve yet to see a graph that shows it’s relationship to “care” and “healing.”

All my wife’s friends at the hospital where she works say the legislation will destroy the healthcare system.

Do all doctors feel this way? We’ve had centuries of private healthcare and most people seem to hate their medical providers.

If I’m wrong, shouldn’t everything be working great just the way it is?

OSCAR “MANNY” MANHEIM

Dear Answerbox

Last July I lost my job as an Administrative Assistant. I’d been with the company for over nine years, but after they downsized I was told my services were no longer needed.

I’ve always been quite a positive person and not one to sit around, so I set out to find a new job immediately.

After seven months, I’ve sent out hundreds of resumes and had dozens of interviews, but I haven’t had a single job offer. I’ve been looking for secretarial or administrative work, but a recruiter recently suggested that I lower my sights and consider a janitorial position.

I was very angry with the man, but once I got home I fell into a deep depression.

At this point my confidence is totally shattered. I can’t figure out what kind of work I should be looking for. I really don’t know what to do.

I hope you can help me.
